Ladakh, India On My Mind
Ladakh, literally translating to “Land of high passes” is more of an emotion than just a place, that travellers and tourists connect to. Part of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh brings out the adventurer in you. As you climb higher on this rustic land, you travel deeper into yourself. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that this is a transformational journey. There is a raw magnetic energy in its majestic snow-capped mountains, never-ending stretch of barren lands, mystic aura and rugged emptiness that awakens the spiritual side of you.
The area of Ladakh sees a beautiful amalgamation of two communities, the Shia Muslims and Buddhists. Various monasteries that were built hundreds of years before, still stand tall oozing charm. Thiksey Monastery, Deskit Monastery, Lomayuru Monastery are a few examples. They cast an enchanting spell on its audiences.
“Certainly, travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent in the ideas of living.” – Miriam Beard rightly said so. Indeed, a bike ride to Ladakh is an experience of a lifetime. It is a journey that will leave you feeling fresh with a new perspective in life and you would come back with memories worth a lifetime.
Rent a bike from Wheelstreet and embark on this adventure. You will be left spoilt for choice with the huge fleet in front of you. You can rent an Enfield from Manali orhire a Sports bike from Delhi and ride all the upto Ladakh. Experiencing the adventure of a lifetime has become so much more easy, due to various bike rental companies giving out many different bikes on rent, for customers, at affordable rates.
The roads are rocky and challenging, but a pleasure to ride on all the same. Be aware of landslides in the region. There are stretches in this route where you may have to literally ride into a river, or on gravelled paths.
As you climb higher, the oxygen content in the atmosphere decreases, therefore, give enough breaks and pit stops to get used to the climate as you ascend. Make sure to give yourself ample amount of rest. There is no medicine like a good lazy nap in situations like these.
Be wary of the food you consume. There are variety of dishes worth tasting while in this region of the planet. Some mouth-watering thukpas, momos, chhupri(yak milk cheese), the typical Kashmiri Qahwa would make your tummy happy.
Most of all this entire journey is about outdoing yourself and exploring different places within you as outside. Enjoy the serenity of the places and feel at one with nature.
The cold climate of the place and the warm hearts of its people will leave you wanting for more.
